Maki and hosomaki calories: estimates per piece
Maki are rolls with seaweed on the outside and rice around the filling. Hosomaki are the thin version with a single ingredient.
Common maki and hosomaki
Hosomaki, thin and with a single filling such as cucumber, tuna, or salmon, are among the lightest rolls. Larger maki or those with more ingredients rise in the estimate.
The amount of rice and any added sauces explain most of the difference from one piece to another.
To estimate a whole roll, count the pieces (usually 6 for hosomaki) and multiply by the per-piece estimate, adding sauces and sesame seeds separately.
| Type | Estimate per piece |
| Cucumber hosomaki (kappa) | 20–35 kcal |
| Tuna hosomaki (tekka) | 28–45 kcal |
| Salmon maki | 30–50 kcal |
| Avocado maki | 35–55 kcal |
Estimates are indicative averages and vary with piece size.
Frequently asked questions
